Some weeks are peaceful. Others are pure chaos. This past week was definitely the latter.
It all started on March 18, 2025, at 6 AM, when we had to evacuate the horses. After heavy rainfall, the stables were underwater, and we had no choice but to move them to safety. The whole process was rushed and stressful, but we managed to get everyone out.
Just when I thought we could breathe again, Texas decided to throw another challenge our way.
March 19: Texas Gets Colic
Barely a day after settling into his temporary home, Texas started showing signs of colic. If you’ve ever dealt with colic in a horse, you know how terrifying it is. The pain, the risk of complications, the helplessness—it’s a nightmare every horse owner dreads.
We immediately called the vet, and the next few hours were all about monitoring him, keeping him moving, and hoping he wouldn’t worsen. It was tense, but we knew we had to stay on top of it.
Texas the Escape Artist—And His Stolen Feast
As if colic wasn’t enough, Texas and another horse decided they weren’t interested in staying put. Together, they figured out how to open their stalls and went straight for the feed. The problem? It wasn’t Texas’s feed.
Diet changes can be dangerous for horses, and after colic, it’s even worse. The vet ordered strict food restrictions, so Texas was definitely not supposed to be eating anything, let alone someone else’s grain. But Texas being Texas, he made sure he got what he wanted—probably keeping the other horse from getting much.
The Aftermath: Walking, Medicine, and Recovery
With food off the table, the only thing we could do was walk him. And walk. And walk some more. Keeping him moving was crucial to prevent his colic from worsening.
Today, he’s getting medicine to help his system recover. The other horse? Completely fine. Not a single issue. It really makes me think Texas must have been extra stubborn—probably not letting anyone else near the stolen feed.
Now, we wait. Colic is unpredictable, but Texas is tough. Hopefully, this is just a bump in the road, and he’ll be back to his usual self soon. After this week, though, I think we all deserve a break.
